Some bars and restaurants are just . . . bars and restaurants; places to get a drink and a bite to eat. And then there are the other kinds, the ones you walk into for a drink and a snack and stumble out of at closing time, knowing you’ll be back soon.
I’m talking about the kind of place where the night gets away from you in the best possible way, and where the bartender, waitstaff, and even the stranger sitting on the next stool over feel like old friends by the time you’re walking out. Places where the chef in the kitchen buys the right ingredients and knows what to do with them, and where the drinks on offer range from tried and true to unusual and interesting.
And, in those places, sometimes, if you’re especially lucky, the music is not just some playlist generated by an algorithm based on a demographic profile. Instead, it’s been put together by a music lover - a fan, first and foremost–who has thought a lot about what will sound great in that particular room on that particular night. And, it’s being played on a system that was carefully put together to fill the room with clear, rich sound.
It was with those places and those experiences in mind that we created Junebug. We were fortunate enough to find a home just down a flight of stairs from the studio where the Meters, Allen Toussaint and so many other artists recorded music that is unmistakably and quintessentially of this city. We’ve created an environment that is simultaneously comfortable and full of surprises, and we’ve assembled a vintage sound system and an ever-growing vinyl record collection that we hope you will enjoy exploring as much as we do. New Orleans has a kind of magic for making people feel present together, and Junebug is our small way of pitching in to a place and a culture we love.
Junebug Music Club is where all of that spills out of the bar and into your inbox. We want to share the artists making something happen in this town right now, the record store lifers who’ve spent decades hauling crates and passing the good stuff down to the next person walking in, the DJ’s who are the master curators of musical history and atmosphere, and even a bit of the the history humming underneath it all. Joining is as easy as sharing your email, and there are plenty of easy ways to earn merch, drinks, food, and more, just by hanging out and enjoying what we have to offer.
We’ll keep you in the loop on what’s happening at the bar and around town, introduce you to folks (and music) worth knowing, and welcome you in personally to enjoy what we’re spinning, what we (and you!) are celebrating, and just whatever other mischief we get up to.
It’s not complicated, really. We love this place and the people who fill it up, and we’d love to talk about it with you.
That’s the whole idea. Come pull up a stool whenever you can.
